OUR SINGERS

Daphne Barnum (she/her) – Alto

Daphne is an Alto from Tokyo, Japan. She moved to the US to attend the University of Oregon where she studied music education and mathematics. During her time in Eugene, Daphne sang with and directed the a cappella group Mind the Gap, sang with the UO Chamber Choir, Oregon Bach Festival Chorus and with the chamber ensemble Vox Resonat. Since graduating, Daphne has sung with the Collegium Choir at the Proto Cathedral of St. James the Greater, performed as a soloist with the Southwest Washington Symphony, and has been with In Medio since its founding in 2019. After a few years of teaching music at Catlin Elementary in Kelso, Washington, she decided to pursue another one of her passions: food! She currently works as a cook at Obon Shokudo, a new vegan Japanese comfort food restaurant in southeast Portland.

Emma Bergman (she/her) – Alto

Emma Bergman is thrilled to sing with In Medio this season. Emma is the choir teacher at Tumwata Middle School in Oregon City. She also taught choir for three years in the Tillamook School District before moving to Portland and was honored for her work in Tillamook by Oregon ACDA with the 2023 Emerging Conductor award. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from St. Olaf College and grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago. She also serves as the alto section leader for the Portland Symphonic Choir. Outside of singing, she loves hiking, crocheting, yoga, and playing piano.

Alex Berg (he/him) – Bass

Alex Berg, proud Vancouver native, is stoked to have found his forever choral home in In Medio; enjoying being in the midst of a relatively new organization, creating and evolving and discovering its identity. Professionally, a medical data analyst, he is energized by the community he has found within the choir. And math puzzles, escape rooms, and board games. Obviously.

James Brown (he/him) – Baritone

Former UO Duck and Gresham native, James Brown is currently teaching elementary music in the Gresham-Barlow school district in addition to singing with In Medio. He firmly believes that excellent music teaching requires excellent musicianship. When he's not teaching or singing he is most likely enjoying a game with his partner or friends. His pre-concert montra, "Flies and ties!", encourages both himself and other tie/fly wearing performers to avoid any on-stage embarrassments... It has a 100% success rate.

Donovan Cassell (he/him) – Tenor

Donovan Cassell is a tenor originally from Independence, Oregon and is new to the Portland area. During his years at the University of Oregon, he sang with the UO Chamber Choir, UO Gospel Singers, and was the musical director of On The Rocks A Cappella for the 2014-2015 season. Post-college, he has performed in theatrical productions in the Corvallis area. During the day, he works as a Video Editor and Producer for Turell Group in Eugene. You may recognize him from Lane Transit District’s Don’t Invite COVID ad campaign. After work, he enjoys heavy metal concerts, gaming, and exploring new places to eat. Donovan is ecstatic to be a member of In Medio, and is so excited to sing with all these awesome people.

Maddy Gourlay (she/they) – Alto

Maddy Gourlay is an alto from Southwest Portland and is honored to have joined In Medio this year. She sang in various music groups at the University of Oregon from 2014-2018, including the UO Chamber Choir, the competitive a cappella group Mind the Gap, the UO Jazz Choir, and the University Singers. She also sang with the Greater Eugene barbershop chorus from 2016-2017. After graduating from University of Oregon in 2018, she moved back to Portland and got her masters in education at Portland State University in 2022. She is currently teaching second grade at James Templeton Elementary. She spends her free time (what free time??) performing with various community theaters around town and playing DnD with her friends at their apartment complex (read: aspiring commune). She is thrilled to be returning to choral music after a five-year hiatus and can't wait to share the music of In Medio with you.

Bailey Halleen (she/her) – Soprano

Bailey is a soprano born and raised in Salem, Oregon. She graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor’s of Music in Music Education and was recognized as the 2021 Outstanding Scholar in Music Education. She performed in the award-winning ensemble, UO Chamber Choir, who placed first in the Grand Prix of Nations in Gothenburg, Sweden under the direction of Dr. Sharon Paul. As an educator, she is the Choir Director at Straub Middle School in Salem. She is thrilled to sing with In Medio again this year alongside some wonderful musicians and friends, old and new! When she isn’t teaching middle schoolers or singing in her car, she loves to spend time with friends, family, and her two cats Maeve and Honey.

Wyatt Jackson (he/him) – Bass

Wyatt Jackson is a native Portlander, who recently earned his M.M. in Vocal Performance at Portland State University. He previously graduated from the University of Puget Sound where he earned his B.M. in Vocal Performance. In high school Wyatt sang in choir under the direction of John Eisemann in the Grant choral program. He is happy to be back in Portland singing with Mr. Eisemann again. Wyatt is also teaching voice lessons at Mount Hood Community College during the school year.

Alex Johnson (he/him) – Bass

Alexander Johnson is a composer, conductor, vocalist, and educator currently based in Beaverton, OR. He has performed with numerous premiere vocal ensembles across the country; from 2012-2014, he sang with the University of Oregon Chamber Choir, which won the Fleischmann International Trophy Competition at the Cork International Choral Festival in May 2013. He has also performed at the Oregon Bach Festival during the 2013, 2014, and 2015 seasons under the batons of Craig Hella Johnson, Helmuth Rilling, and Matthew Halls. While living in Austin, TX, he performed with Inversion Ensemble, Austin Cantorum, Austin Baroque Orchestra, and Ars Longa Ensemble. Alex also performed for three seasons with the Eugene-based early music vocal ensemble Vox Resonat. From 2008-2012, he sang with the Lawrence University Concert Choir, which performed at the 2009 American Choral Directors Association National Convention in Oklahoma City.

Conor Magee (he/him) – Bass

Connor is a lifelong Portlander who feels tremendously proud to be joining the incredibly talented In Medio roster for a third season. After attending George Fox University where he sang with the concert and chamber choirs, Connor continued to perform with the Grotto Carolers during each year’s Festival of Lights. Currently, Connor works at Rahab's Sisters, coordinating food and supply delivery for his houseless neighbors and advocating for person-centered solutions to our housing crisis.

Easton Marks (they/he) – Bass

Easton Marks is a Baritone born and raised in Salem, Oregon. They are a recent graduate from the University of Oregon and hold a Bachelor’s of Music in Music Education. While at the University of Oregon, Easton sang with the award-winning UO Chamber Choir under the direction of Dr. Sharon Paul. During this time, Easton traveled internationally for the 2019 Grand Prix of Nations Competition in Gothenburg, Sweden, and to Spain to perform Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles for the 850th anniversary of the Order of Saint James in Santiago de Compostela. Most recently, they have performed as Sam in Daniel Daly’s The Banshee and they have performed as a quintet member in Handel’s Acis and Galatea. Easton has performed with the Oregon Bach Festival, Eugene Symphony Chorus, Eugene Opera, Cascadia Opera Company, and currently performs with In Medio and Willamette Master Chorus. Easton is thrilled to join In Medio this season!

Alexa McCuen (she/her) – Alto

Alexa McCuen graduated from University of Oregon in 2018 with a Bachelors of Music in Voice Performance. After graduating she moved back to her beloved hometown of Portland. Alexa is a real estate agent with Berkshire Hathaway. It is a pleasure and privilege for her to be able to sing with other like-minded people while trying to navigate the real world. Alexa likes to spend her free time taking forest-filled hikes, roller skating, singing, and hanging with friends!

Philippe Moore (he/him) – Bass

Philippe enjoys making music with others, and has performed with several groups, including Nova Singers out of Galesburg, Illinois, the Colorado Symphony Chorus, the Portland Symphonic Choir, and now In Medio. When Philippe is not performing he is raising a toddler with his partner in a small town outside Salem, writing code for the web, and baking artisanal sourdough to die for.

Lindsey Newby (she/her) – Soprano

Lindsey Newby is from Beaverton, Oregon. She studied music education at Pacific University, where she directed the a capella group, Voce Femme. During this time, she sang in Pacific University's Chamber Singers, where she had the opportunity to tour in Ireland and Hawaii. She is a general music teacher, vocal coach, and a pianist. Besides singing, Lindsey loves to go to the beach, read, and try new foods.

Elizabeth Reynaud (she/her) – Soprano

Elizabeth Reynaud graduated from the University of Oregon in June 2020 with a BS in General Music and concentration in voice, as well as a minor in Nonprofit Administration. She studied with Milagro Vargas and sang in the UO Chamber Choir under Dr. Sharon Paul, where they won the 2019 Grand Prix of Nations in the Chamber Choir/Vocal Ensembles category. Additionally, she sang with the Berwick Chorus in the Oregon Bach Festival in 2018 and 2019. Elizabeth was a recipient of the Maude and H.B. Densmore Memorial Scholarship and Summit Scholarship from 2016-2020, where she sang as a soloist with the Women's Choral Society of Eugene. She currently works in marketing and resides in Portland with her fiancé and their four amazing cats.

Luis Rivera (he/him) – Tenor

Luis Rivera is a fourth-year music teacher teaching at Woodburn High School, where he directs the Woodburn High School choirs. He’s from Klamath Falls, Oregon and studied music education at the University of Oregon, where he graduated in 2019. Luis has also performed all over Oregon and was a part of the University of Oregon chamber choir, where he was also involved with performing with the Oregon Bach Festival for about five years. Luis remains active in his communities and performs individually in churches and small venues. This is Luis’ second year with In Medio.

Jonathan Schildt (he/him) – Tenor

Jon Schildt started singing in fourth grade in a boys choir led by Kathi Dooley, the beloved Quincy, Illinois music teacher featured on Queer Eye. He has been singing in choirs ever since, including ensembles at the University of Illinois and University of York, England; the Apollo Chorus of Chicago; the Wicker Park Choral Singers; and the Portland Symphonic Choir. Jon, an appellate attorney by day, is thrilled to be singing with In Medio.

Zach Stoddard (he/they) – Tenor

Zach Stoddard is excited to join In Medio this year for his first season. He holds a BA in Music from Northern Arizona University where he was student president of the Shrine of the Ages Choir, member of High Altitude Vocal Jazz, intern with the Sedona Academy of Chamber Singers, as well as president and music director of the a cappella group Elevation. Since moving to Portland a few years ago Zach has been an active member of Portland Symphonic Choir, Resonance Ensemble, Portland Phoenix Chamber Choirs, and any other gig he can land. Outside of music, Zach finds work in the service industry and loves to explore all of the nature and culture that the Pacific Northwest has to offer!

Jack Strother (he/him) – Tenor

Jack is a CPA in Portland — he does not do taxes. He attended the University of Oregon for his undergraduate and master’s degrees. He sang in the award winning UO Chamber Choir for four years, as well the a capella group “On The Rocks” and the renaissance chamber ensemble Vox Resonat. He is excited to sing in Portland with such a talented group. In his spare time he likes to golf, cook, shop for “tall people pants” and use his “tall card” to get the best seats on airplanes.

Tim Tyler (he/him) – Bass

Tim Tyler is a bass-baritone originally from Chicago. While working on a materials science degree at the University of Illinois, he sang and toured with the Varsity Men’s Glee Club, and he was a member of the acclaimed a cappella octet The Other Guys. Tim then sang with the Wicker Park Choral Singers while completing his Ph.D. at Northwestern University. After his career brought him to Portland, Tim was a member of the Portland Symphonic Choir for three seasons before joining In Medio. When he’s not making music, Tim can be found hiking, baking, and working on the next generation of Intel’s microprocessors.

Elena Zilar (she/her) – Alto

Elena graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science (2021) and a Masters in Education (2022). She was born and raised in Eugene and moved to the Portland area after graduation. While studying at UO, she sang with UO’s Chamber Choir for three years under the direction of Dr. Sharon Paul. In 2019, she had the opportunity to travel and perform in Sweden with the Chamber Choir, placing first in the Grand Prix of Nations. Elena has also performed in the Oregon Bach Festival with the SFYCA (2016-2018) and with the UO Chamber Choir (2019). Outside of singing, Elena’s hobbies include baking, crocheting, and backpacking.

Ethan Eisemann (he/him) – Bass/baritone

Ethan Eisemann is a bass/baritone with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. During his time with the Fort Lewis College choir program, under Dr. Chiaravalloti, Ethan participated in two European tours including performances at Melt Abbey and the Saltzburg Cathedral in Austria. He is a current member of the Portland Symphonic Choir and performs with numerous church choirs in the Portland area.

Jessica Hall (she/her) – Soprano

Jessica is proud to be a founding member of In Medio. Jessica has been living in the Portland area for over 10 years now. She moved to Portland to study Music Therapy at Marylhurst University and was active in many of Marylhurst Choirs also known as Portland Phoenix Choirs. Prior to the Pandemic Jessica was singing in up to three choirs at a time throughout California and the Portland area. Jessica's choral singing has allowed her to sing in some amazing acoustics and places like Carnegie Hall, Ireland, Sweden, Latvia, Italy, London, and Wales. Although Jessica loves the art of singing as one in choir some of her favorite lead roles have included Josephine in HMS Pinafore and Mabel in Pirate of Penzance. In her free time Jessica enjoys traveling and spending time with friends and family. Jessica is excited to be singing once again with In Medio Choir and singing with such incredible musicians.

Kelly Hefty (she/her) – Alto

Kelly Hefty was born and raised in Oregon, spending most of her life in the Aloha area. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon and was recognized as the 2020 Outstanding Scholar in Music Education. She has performed with numerous award-winning ensembles, including the University of Oregon Chamber Choir who placed first in the Grand Prix of Nations under the direction of Dr. Sharon Paul. As an educator, she is the Choir Director and AP Coordinator at Beaverton High School. She also has experience teaching elementary music and co-conducting the Eugene Parkinson’s Choir: a therapy group that uses choral music for vocal rehabilitation.

Dane Johnsen (he/him) – Baritone

This is Dane's first year as a member of In Medio. Dane’s long standing love for music was first instilled in him by his father in the form of percussion, which Dane still dabbles in. During his time in college, Dane was a member of the University of Oregon Chamber Choir. He sang with them for two years, also traveling with them to Sweden in August of 2019 to tour and take part in the Grand Prix of Nations choir competition. Dane graduated from the University of Oregon in 2019 with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism. From the Summer of 2020 through June 2022, he served as House Manager for The Onyx House, the residential community he was a part of during college in Eugene, before returning to his hometown of Portland. Today, you can find Dane pursuing his love for hospitality as a bartender at a local taphouse.

Olivia Langley (she/her) – Soprano

Olivia Langley is thrilled to be joining In Medio for her first season! Olivia graduated from Brown University in 2020 with a double major in Computer Science and Music. She was a member of the Brown University Chorus for four years, during which time she toured Croatia and Ireland with the group and performed annually as a soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah. Outside of chorus, she also served as Music Director and President of the Higher Keys a cappella group, and was recognized by faculty of the Music Department as a recipient of the David Laurent award for excellence in vocal performance. Olivia currently works in the cybersecurity industry as a penetration tester, and in her free time enjoys accumulating houseplants, building mechanical keyboards, and getting overly invested in puzzle games. She is very excited to be singing again with such a talented and welcoming group of musicians!

Daniel Malmuth (he/him) – Tenor

Daniel first moved to Oregon back in 2011, where he completed his Bachelor’s at Oregon State University in mathematics. While he was in Corvallis, he sang with the Oregon State Meistersingers, Chamber Choir, and University Chorale. He completed his secondary teaching program at Lewis and Clark College and is now a math teacher at Tigard High School. He is incredibly happy to be singing in a choir again and has really liked getting to know everyone in the group.

Maddy McBride (she/her) – Soprano

She’s back! Maddy McBride studied Music at the University of Oregon and sang in the University of Oregon Chamber Choir for three years. She has a deep passion for choral music and the arts in education. Maddy was one of the original members of In Medio as a soprano, however when the pandemic started, she decided to go back to school and get a Masters degree in Elementary Education. While in her first year teaching, she also welcomed the arrival of her son, Jamie! Now that things have settled down, she is thrilled to be singing again with this wonderful choir and making music with dear friends.

Jen Milius (she/her) – Soprano

Jen is a Portland-based soprano with an expressive, agile, and clear voice uniquely suited for interpreting early and new music. She’s sung with the Portland Symphonic Choir and the Oregon Symphony, the Big Mouth Society, and is a founding member of In Medio and Nexus Vocal Ensemble. She is currently working on her performance practice with Dr. Lisa Neher, and has also coached with Angela Niederloh and Emily Lau. A collaborative graphic designer by day, Jen enjoys long walks, gardening, and riding her bike.

Jenny Mosher (she/her) – Alto

Jenny has been a member of In Medio and the glorious Alto section since 2021, and is honored to be singing with this incredible group of people. She has performed in choirs locally and across the country including Portland Symphonic Choir, Choral Arts Philadelphia, The University of Puget Sound’s Adelphian Concert Choir, as well as various vocal jazz and a cappella ensembles. When she’s not singing, Jenny can be found working in the field of organ donation and enjoying some of her other hobbies including knitting, bird-watching, hiking, and making ridiculous puns.

Carolyn Quick (she/her) – Soprano

Portland-based composer-soprano-lyricist Carolyn Quick (she/her) “is establishing herself as one of the most important voices in our community (Makrokosmos Project 7: Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman).” As a singer and composer, Carolyn loves exploring the unique timbral and textural possibilities of the human voice, and advocates for historically excluded composers with her collective Persisting Sound. Carolyn has performed with Eugene Opera, Queer Opera, Portland Symphonic Choir, and the Oregon Bach Festival Vocal Fellows Program; has been a guest soloist for the South Puget Sound Community College Choirs and the Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia; and currently sings with In Medio, Resonance Ensemble, and the Portland Phoenix Chamber Choir.

Most recently, Carolyn sang with Resonance Ensemble and the Oregon Symphony to premiere Damien Geter’s An African American Requiem and was commissioned by the Portland Phoenix Chamber Choir, premiering her work alongside Margaret Bond’s Credo. For more information visit www.carolynquick.com.

Sara Quinn Rivara (she/her) – Alto

Sara Quinn Rivara has performed with the Portland Symphonic Choir, Resonance Ensemble, Aspire Ensemble, Kalamazoo Symphony, Kalamazoo Bach Festival Chorus, and Opera Grand Rapids. She is the President and Producer of the Light Opera of Portland, and has sung with In Medio since its founding.

Vanessa Rush (she/her) – Alto

Vanessa is excited to be in her second season with In Medio. Singing in school choirs since second grade, she has been fortunate to perform under the direction of some truly inspirational teachers such as John Baker, Dr. Sharon Paul, and Dr. Ethan Sperry. Vanessa holds a Bachelor in Music Education and a Master’s in General Education from Portland State University. While at Portland State University, she had the honor of singing with its Chamber Choir, an ensemble that has earned more than 30 awards in international choir competitions. After teaching middle and high school choir for four years in Seaside, Oregon, she transitioned into a career in real estate. Her passion for choral music remains ever present and she is thrilled to be part of a talented group of musicians once again.

Alice Somerville (she/her) – Soprano

Alice Somerville is a soprano originally from Salem, Oregon. Alice is a recent graduate from the University of Oregon where she has sang with the internationally renowned UO Chamber Choir, who recently traveled to Spain to sing for the 850th anniversary of the Order of St. James. Most recently she performed as Jenna in Daniel Daly’s The Banshee, Mrs. Nordstrom in Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, Aire in Antonio Literes’s Los Elementos, and was a finalist for the U of O Concerto and Aria Competition. She is thrilled to join In Medio for this concert season and excited to be singing with some old friends!

Helen Strother (she/her) – Alto

Helen Strother is a BCBA and Case Supervisor for an Autism clinic in Beaverton. She graduated from the University of Oregon with dual degrees in Music and Psychology, and has since obtained masters degrees in Special Education and Applied Behavior Analysis. She has sung with In Medio since it’s inaugural cycle in 2019 and is thrilled to be back. Helen also sang with the award-winning UO Chamber Choir under the direction of Dr. Sharon Paul, as well as the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus and Eugene Symphony Chorus. In her spare time she enjoys baking, yoga, and waffles.

Miles Thoming-Gale (he/him) – Tenor

Miles Thoming-Gale is an elementary music teacher and native Portland human. He sang with the UO Chamber Choir during their 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons and performed at the International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany. Since graduating University of Oregon in 2016 Miles has been teaching elementary music and loving it. He is very excited to be performing with In Medio this season and looks forward to sharing this powerful program with an audience!

Dane Zielinski (he/him) – Tenor

Dane began singing at an early age in his hometown of Salem, Oregon. This continued through his time at Pomona College where he sang with the Pomona College Choir, Glee Club, and one semester abroad with the Edinburgh University Renaissance Singers in Scotland. Upon graduating with a BA in geology, he moved back to the northwest and sang with the Seattle Symphony Chorale for a year before moving down to Portland. He is thrilled to be joining In Medio for his first season. When not singing, Dane is a full time stained glass and light sculpture artist. You can find his work at www.danezielinski.com. In his free time he designs board games, knits, and supports the Portland Timbers.
